THE STORY OF NALEDI CYCC
At Naledi Child and Youth Care Centre, hope has a name — and it shines brightly through the lives of the children who call it home. “Naledi,” meaning star in Setswana, reflects the belief that every child, with the right love and care, can rise, grow, and live a full and meaningful life.
Eighteen years ago, Naledi opened its doors to just nine children. Since then, more than 30 children have found a home here — some for a season, others for their entire childhood. Each child arrives with a unique story, and each story becomes part of a journey marked by healing, growth, and God’s faithfulness.
Naledi provides a safe and nurturing environment for children between the ages of 5 and 18 who are in need of care and protection. But it is more than just a place of safety — it is a space where dignity is restored, joy is rediscovered, and children are given the opportunity to dream again.
Daily life at Naledi is shaped by structure and care. Mornings begin early, with simple routines that create a sense of stability. School days are filled with learning and growth, while afternoons bring homework, shared meals, and connection. Evenings slow down with time to rest and reflect, while weekends offer moments of laughter, play, and spiritual nourishment through church and fellowship.
These rhythms may seem ordinary, but they are deeply life-giving. In a world where many of these children have experienced uncertainty, structure becomes a source of safety, helping them feel seen, secure, and valued.
At the heart of Naledi is a dedicated team of caregivers. Housemother Antoinette has faithfully served for seven years, pouring love, strength, and care into each child’s life. Alongside her is “Mama Ellen,” who has been part of the Naledi family for nearly 15 years — a quiet but powerful presence of discipline, warmth, and unwavering care.
Naledi’s impact is also made possible through the support of volunteers and partners. From those who bake birthday cakes and assist with school projects, to families who donate resources and professionals who provide emotional and therapeutic support — each contribution plays a meaningful role. Faithful financial supporters and community partners continue to help sustain the work, reminding us that it truly takes a village to raise a child.
Like many non-profit organisations, Naledi faces ongoing challenges. Financial pressures, operational demands, and the emotional weight of caring for vulnerable children require constant faith, resilience, and support. Yet, through it all, the community surrounding Naledi continues to stand together in prayer, generosity, and hope.
The impact of this care is seen in the lives of the children. One young boy, who arrived shy and non-verbal, has grown into a joyful child who now engages confidently and seeks connection. At the same time, a matric student in the home is preparing for her next chapter, stepping into adulthood with hope and determination. These stories reflect the transformation that takes place when children are rooted in love.
Naledi is part of a greater vision — one that extends beyond the home itself. Rooted in the calling to care for the vulnerable, the dream is to continue building spaces of restoration, strengthening families, and raising children who will one day lead healthy, whole lives of their own.
As the journey continues, Naledi remains committed to walking with each child through every season — the joys and the challenges alike.
Because when children are planted in love, they grow in hope.
